Melissa Welsh

Melissa Welsh is a multi-disciplined photographer who lives in the beautiful city of Nelson, British Columbia. She is the owner of Elephant Mtn. Gallery, a photo gallery that represents herself and many other local photographers. Her work can be found in private collections around the world as well as in regional, national and international publications.

Melissa’s work is, in her words “shaped by authentic emotion.” She travels the globe for both weddings and adventure in search of genuine reactions and joy.

Artist Statement

I love to create imagery for people that will help them relive moments of their lives. I want my photos to illicit an emotion, whether it’s excitement, warmth or love.

When photographing a wedding, I prefer to do it in a way that is real. As with some photographers who wait for the perfect light to capture their image, I wait for the perfect moment, the one when my clients have forgotten I’m there and they share a laugh, an embrace or a kiss. Those are the authentic moments that define my work and inspire me to keep shooting.
I feel my work continues to get stronger as I learn more about people. The technical side of photography is second nature to me now but developing the sense of what will happen when is something I continue to practice.

Melissa is a member of the Professional Photographers of America and is the publisher of the regional wedding magazine Kootenay Bride. She also sits on the board of directors for her local Chamber of Commerce and on the executive committee of the Nelson Business Association.
